UNDERSTAND THE DANCE

What is Latin Hustle?

Latin Hustle is a smooth, energetic partner dance built around rotation, connection and syncopated timing.

Its roots are tied to New York's 1970s club culture and the disco era, where different Hustle styles developed alongside Latin social-dance communities. Today, dancers use Hustle with disco, funk, pop, house and other steady dance music.

The movement can feel familiar to Salsa dancers because you will recognize turns, hand changes and partner connection—but the timing and flow are distinctly Hustle.

WHY DANCERS LOVE IT

One dance. A huge music library.

Hustle lets you use partner-dance skills with music that may not be Salsa or Bachata at all.

CAN YOU HEAR IT?

From four even beats to &1-2-3

Start by hearing a steady pulse. Then listen to how Hustle compresses the first two weight changes into the syncopated &1.

Tip: keep the pulse steady and notice how &1 feels closer together than the following counts.

LEARN THE FEEL

First, make the basic easy.

Before speed or styling, learn four clear weight changes. Once the movement feels comfortable, compress the first two into the syncopation.

1Transfer your weight
2Transfer again
3Continue through the rhythm
4Finish balanced and ready
THEN SYNCOPATE IT

1 · 2 · 3 · 4 → &1 · 2 · 3

The goal is not to move faster everywhere. The change happens at the beginning of the pattern: two quicker weight changes, followed by more space on counts 2 and 3. In class, Moris adds the exact lead/follow direction, body action and partner connection.

USE MUSIC YOU ALREADY LOVE

What music can you dance Hustle to?

01

Disco

The classic home of Hustle: a clear pulse, driving bass line and continuous energy.

02

Funk & Pop

When the groove is steady, Hustle can give familiar songs a completely different partner-dance feel.

03

House & Dance

Modern club tracks often make the pulse easy to identify—perfect for practicing timing and flow.

How do you know if a song works?

Don't start with genre labels. Start with the beat. If you can comfortably identify a consistent pulse and maintain the Hustle timing without rushing, you have a song worth experimenting with.

LATIN HUSTLE FAQ

Questions dancers ask.

Is Latin Hustle the same as New York Hustle?

The names are often used with overlap, and terminology can vary between communities and teachers. At San Tropez, we focus on modern partner Hustle timing, connection, rotation and musicality.

What is the Latin Hustle count?

A common modern Hustle count is &1-2-3. The &1 is syncopated, meaning those first two weight changes happen closer together in time.

Is Hustle only danced to disco?

No. Disco is central to Hustle's history, but dancers also use funk, pop, house and other dance music when the pulse and tempo work comfortably.

Do I need a partner?

No permanent partner is required for San Tropez group classes. Partner rotation is part of the learning process.

Can a Salsa dancer learn Hustle?

Yes. Salsa dancers already have useful partner-dance skills such as connection, turns, spotting and hand changes. The main adjustment is learning Hustle's timing and movement quality.

Can complete beginners join this Latin Hustle class?

The current San Tropez Latin Hustle class is Level 3+, so it is best for dancers who already have a partner-dance foundation. Beginners can start with our introductory Salsa, Bachata, Merengue and Body Isolations classes.
